I found this discussion so helpful in Learningr to read poetry. I have MarKa’s book and have been diligently reading and enjoying it. It’s a new experience for me.
A wonderful interview with Mar Ka discussing poetry and reading powerful poems from her new book “Behooved.” I was inspired to read more poetry, more often. I will also re-read Behooved regularly, to experience – through language, metaphor, rhythm- Alaska’s vast, and fragile, beauty.
Poetry, when done well, can call out the beauty of life experience, calling out the profound in the unusual, or simply in the pattern of a simple experience. Artists like Mary bring out in full definition what we as humans, in our most observant and elevated selves, notice and feel, but in our regular vernacular, don’t express. Mary notices – and using transcendent language, thus enlightens life through her descriptions. Thank you!
I thoroughly enjoyed Mary’s talk about her new collection of poems, Behooved. In this talk, she reads some of her favorite poems, describes how her book is structured around caribou herd migration and tells us of her early influences in the making of poems. Great show, with David Cheesam.
I really enjoyed listening to and learning about poetry from Mar Ka! Great interview. I greatly appreciate that she used her poetry to educate and inspire readers about climate change.
I really love what Mar Ka says about imagination–how we “disbelieve, discount, deny” because we can’t imagine, and that poetry helps us to imagine. I’m reading Behooved now and really enjoying it. Thanks for the interview.
