Election Day is today! Finally, the phone calls, the text messages, the emails, the ads, and the mailers will end.
Voters will decide races in the Alaska General Election and the Mat-Su Borough Regular Election.
If you haven’t voted early or absentee, today is the day to get out to the polls and vote. Make sure you know where to go to cast your ballot.
Polling places are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Locations are spread throughout the Mat-Su. But here’s something important to remember: You must go to the polling location assigned to your voting precinct. You can’t necessarily vote at whichever polling place is closest to your home.
In the Palmer area, polling locations include several schools, the Palmer Depot, local churches, Matanuska-Susitna College, and Borough facilities.
Around Wasilla, voters will find polling places at schools, Wasilla City Hall, the Menard Sports Center, and several other community facilities.
For those living farther out in the Borough, polling locations include Houston City Hall, Talkeetna Public Library, Willow Community Center, Susitna Valley High School, and Glacier View Community Center, along with other locations serving Big Lake and surrounding communities.
So, how do you know which polling place is yours?
Your voter card from the Division of Elections has your precinct number on it. Or maybe, like me, your voter card is safely filed, very safely filed. If you know your precinct, you can look up the location of your polling place at matsu.gov/elections.
You can also visit myvoterportal.alaska.gov. Enter your last name and your city. You’ll find your assigned precinct and polling location.
Don’t forget to bring an acceptable form of identification when you go to vote.
There are four ballot propositions on the borough ballot. Matsu.gov has information on the ballot initiatives. A copy of the ordinances will be available at the voting locations.
If you have questions about voting, contact the Mat-Su Borough Clerk’s Office at 907-861-8683.
Local elections have an impact on our communities. Make your voice count!
The State will have preliminary results tonight. The unofficial final results are scheduled for November 18.
The borough hand counts its ballots, so it takes a bit longer to get the preliminary results. The certification deadline for the Mat-Su Borough elections is November 17.
