World-traveler, fiddler, and songwriter Chris Murphy plays at the Mat-Su Resort tonight at 6 p.m. His high-energy solo performances blend roots-driven violin, storytelling, and improvisation.
JOIN Mat Su hosts an Assembly Candidate Forum tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Wasilla. Candidates from districts one, two, and four will attend and respond to questions.
A 30-minute reception with the candidates will follow the forum. JOIN Mat Su was founded as Valley Interfaith Action.
The Alaskana Social Club welcomes the John Budnick Band to the stage tomorrow night. Their sound is a mix of Rock, Blues, and Blues Rock, with explorations into Americana, Indie Pop, and Synth Rock.

The Frost Fest Winter Resource Expo & Canned Food Drive returns on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Palmer Depot. Learn about winter recreation, trails, and classes from local organizations, businesses, and non-profits.
Frost Fest is free and open to the community. Bring a canned food donation for the Palmer Food Bank to enter a door prize drawing.
Bridgette Preston signs copies of her new cookbook, “Baking Up Gold: True Tales and Tasty Treats” at Fireside Books on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. This cookbook ties the recipes to the historic women of Hatcher Pass and Independence Mine.
The First Saturday Vendor Market returns to the Borough Gym. Come shop, eat, and create. 30 local vendors offer a variety of unique handmade goods and local products. And there are food trucks! The Vendor’s Market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A free kids craft event runs from 1 to 3 p.m.
If Bavarian oompah music is your thing, come hang out with the musk ox for a proper Oxtoberfest on Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Musk Ox Farm.
Oompah band Alaska Blaskapelle keeps the waltzes and polkas flowing. The local-grown dinner includes potato salad, sauerkraut, Alaskan bratwurst, hand-crafted soft pretzels, and locally brewed beers on tap. Tickets and info are at muskoxfarm.org.
The Palmer Alehouse celebrates Octoberfest on Saturday with Ken Peltier and his band. The stein hoist competition starts at 6 p.m. The band takes the stage from 7 to 10 p.m. This is a free all ages event. Anyone under 21 must be accompanied by an adult. This is the final outdoor concert of the season at the Alehouse.
Or perhaps you would prefer the Mat-Su Concert Band performance on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Glenn Massay Theater. It’s an evening of music inspired by the grandeur of nature. Tickets and info are at matsuconcertband.org.
Flip the Script: State Edition features candidates running for Alaska State House and Senate seats representing the Mat-Su. Candidates provide brief introductions. Audience members share their perspectives on topics impacting our state.
