It’s time for Page Two: News that might not make the front page for Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

Were you affected by the windstorms in the Mat-Su last month? You have until February 20 to apply for disaster assistance from the State of Alaska. Mat-Su Borough residents can apply for State Individual Assistance and Temporary Housing Grants through the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The Individual Assistance program provides financial grants for disaster-related losses or emergency expenses that are not fully covered by insurance or other assistance.

This includes damage to a primary residence, loss of essential personal property, destruction of the only means of transportation, and medical, dental, or funeral expenses directly caused by the storm.

Individual and Family Grants for Housing Assistance helps homeowners repair essential living areas of a primary residence. It does not cover cosmetic repairs or pre-existing issues.

Individual and Family Grants for Other Needs Assistance may also cover essential personal property, medical and dental costs, funeral expenses, and certain transportation, moving, or storage costs.

Temporary Housing Grants are available when a primary residence is uninhabitable. Renters may receive up to three months of rental assistance. Homeowners may qualify for up to 18 months assistance, based on HUD fair market rates. Payments are made directly to applicants.

Required documentation includes proof of residency, insurance information, damage details, repair estimates, and photos. Applications can be submitted online, by phone at (844) 445-7131. All applications are due by February 20.

You must disclose any disaster assistance received from other sources to prevent duplication of benefits. Alaska law requires this.
