It’s time for Page Two: News that might not make the front page for Wednesday March 4, 2026.

The wind is howling. The air is frigid. You just want to stay inside where it’s warm. You want to cocoon, right?

Well, maybe. But there’s another approach to Alaska’s long winters: embrace them, says Kierre Childers. She’s an organizer of the “Winter Discovery Day.” It’s on Saturday at the Government Peak Recreation Area.

“I can’t speak for everybody,” Childers says, “but I do think, because it’s such a long season in Alaska, you have to embrace it in some way, right? And so, if you’re even curious about what it means to get outside in Alaska’s winter, then that’s what this event is for.”

Childers owns Revel Treks and Tours. It’s an outdoor tour company that caters to both visitors from outside and Alaska residents. She worked with the Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation and the Mat-Su Borough to put on the Winter Discovery Day.

Come learn about outdoor winter activities this Saturday at the Winter Discovery Day. Find out about skiing, fat-tire biking, snowshoeing, and more. You’ll find experts on avalanche safety. You can even check out an avalanche beacon. It helps someone find you in an emergency in the mountains. You can learn how to wax your cross country skis.

Vendors and other outdoor experts will be available to answer your questions. If you’re worried about eager sales reps giving you the hard sell, well, relax. They have equipment to loan for you to try out. The goal is to give gear a test run without spending any money according to Childers.

You’ll pick up a “passport” when you register. You leave the passport with a vendor when you check out gear. When you return, you get your passport back so you can try something else. At the end of the day, you can turn in your passport to pick up some stickers and swag. Who doesn’t love swag? But Childers reminds us, don’t forget the hot chocolate. “That’s the top of my list. That might jump the stickers and swag,” she says.

The Matanuska Telephone Association and the Matanuska Electric Association help fund the event.

The Winter Discovery Day runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is free. However, the borough charges a $5 fee for parking at Government Peak Recreation Area.

The Mat-Su College Art Department presents an exhibition of work by Michael Conti. He is a Professor of Photography and Video Art in the Art Department at UAA.

His video work has been shown in South Korea and at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. He has won awards at the Anchorage International Film Festival. All are welcome to the opening reception on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Mat-Su College Art Gallery.

There is also local art to view. The Art Cafe in Palmer is hosting artist Mimi DeGange. She is an RN who loves to draw, paint and spend time in the mountains. DeGange works in multiple mediums. Come visit with the artist, nibble some snacks and soak up art on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Art Cafe on E. Blueberry Ave. in Palmer.
