It’s time for Page Two: News that might not make the front page for Monday, November 10, 2025.

The Mat-Su Health Foundation has stepped in to help local families and individuals facing food insecurity due to federal actions.

There are more than 8,000 borough residents who receive SNAP benefits and about 1,300 households enrolled in the WIC program. And, these numbers don’t include those who are waiting for benefits.

The Foundation has awarded $250,000 to six community organizations that distribute food and have been hardest hit by the increased demand due to federal benefit delays, furloughs, and layoffs.

They are Blood ’n Fire Ministries, Frontline Mission, Mat-Su Food Bank, Mat-Su Health Services, Palmer Food Bank, and Sunshine Community Health Center.

Food security has been a top priority for the Foundation since 2019.

Beyond emergency relief, the Mat-Su HealthFoundation is working to increase awareness of its program, Connect Mat-Su. This free referral hub links residents to food, housing, and health care resources.

For more information, you can visit connectmatsu.org, call (907) 373-2628, or stop by the office in the Mat-Su Health Foundation building on Crusey Street in Wasilla.

Mat-Su residents can help their neighbors through food or money donations to Mat-Su’s emergency food providers or by volunteering at upcoming holiday food box and/or meal outreaches.

Youth 360 is another bit of good news. This teen after school program is sponsored by United Way Mat-Su. It offers after school activities and community for teens in three Mat-Su school locations – Houston, Wasilla, and a new Northgate location on Tait Drive.

Youth 360 hosted a successful Lights on After School event at Teeland Middle School this weekend. The event featured panels on teen education, teen safety online, vaping, and the power of afterschool activities.

Our last bit of good news today is that borough residents can now track snowplows in real time. The Mat-Su Sentinel reports that the Borough’s online snowplow tracker displays GPS data from contractors’ cellphones, showing where plows have cleared and where they’re headed next.

All road contractors are required to use the system this season after a successful pilot last year. Plowing begins after four inches of snowfall. Residents can report problem areas through the borough’s online problem reporter.

More information can be found at matsusentinel.com.

Last but not least in good news to share, Big Cabbage Radio had a successful fund drive and Cabbage Hop fundraiser last week. We’ll have some preliminary numbers on the fundraising tomorrow. We are still accepting donations for the fund drive at bigcabbageradio.org.

A Veterans Day ceremony honoring all who served will be held at the Glenn Massay Theater from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

The Chickaloon Community Council meets this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Chickaloon Community Center. The agenda includes elections for the board of directors.

On this week’s Home to Roost, John Roberts and Rachel Levitt review how the shutdown is affecting food stamps and heating subsidies, why the Constitution staggers the terms for Senators, and what bizarre statements federal officials now consider appropriate. It airs tonight at 5:30 p.m. on Big Cabbage Radio and is podcast from our website and your favorite podcast channel.
