The Matanuska Community Farmers Market isn’t waiting around for spring.
It’s hosting a pop-up tomorrow from 4-7 p.m. at the United Protestant Church parking lot in downtown Palmer.
Market director Brandi Jo Nyberg joined host Ken Hoffman on our show Ag Matters last week to share what marketgoers can look forward to this season.
Nyberg notes it’s been a slow, wet spring with cold soil temperatures. That means a later planting season. The market is pressing on anyway.
Expect plant starts from several local farms. Seldovich Farm, Singing Nettle Farm and Sauntering Roots will all be there. Chugach Farm hopes to show up, as well.
Marketgoers will also find honey, sourdough, mushrooms, and fermented foods. And don’t forget the great coffee.
Two guest vendors will show up. Kale and Cookies Nutrition offers homemade prepared foods. Following Farms will bring farm-fresh eggs.
Living Flames joins the market this season. They bring kombucha, fermented foods, honey, microgreens, and fresh eggs.
Weekly markets will start on June 10.They will run every Wednesday through the end of September. The market is excited to expand into October. It will move indoors to the church basement.
The market supports food access programs. It’s a SNAP-authorized market with a matching program. Spend up to $40 on your EBT card and receive a matching value in tokens to spend at the market. The new bonus this year is that if you spend $1 on your EBT card, you earn $15 in tokens to spend at the market.
The market accepts WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers as well. It donates produce to the Palmer Food Bank, the Mat-Su Food Bank, and Alaska Family Services.
The market will continue its free community meals. They are offered a few times throughout the season. These hot meals are made with local produce. A grant from the Mat-Su Health Foundation funds the meals.
Nyberg says there’s no need to rush to get to market early. Lines formed before opening in prior years due to a fear of items selling out. The market has grown so that the produce is available throughout the afternoon.
Marketgoers can sign up on the email list for weekly updates and special event announcements . Find everything at matanuskacommunityfarmersmarket.com.
Other options for local farm fresh food include Friday Flings, and Bush’s Bunches. Farm stands opening in June and July include Sun Circle Farm, Moonstone Farm, and Arctic Organics.
On Wednesdays though, the Matanuska Community Farmers Market can’t wait to see you.
