It’s time for Page Two, news you need to know, even if it didn’t make the front page. From school updates to community events, here’s something for you on Tuesday May 5, 2026.
Have you noticed more birds lately? Swans, ducks, and songbirds are showing up as the days get longer and warmer.
Researchers and volunteers are counting raptors at Gunsight Mountain near milepost 118 on the Glenn Highway. The count continues through mid-May. This project through Hawkwatch International has happened every year since 2016.
Hawkwatch ends just in time for bird lovers to join the Audubon “Climate Watch” bird count. This citizen science opportunity runs from May 15 through June 15.
Participants count bird species for five minutes. They repeat the count at twelve sites within a designated area. The program documents how birds are responding to climate change.
Are you more curious than ambitious? Come to the “Migration Journeys” talk at Turkey Red this Thursday at 7:15 p.m. Melanie Smith of the Audubon Society will explore bird migration and how scientists track birds. Smith specializes in the ecology of Alaska and the Arctic. She helped develop the Bird Migration Explorer interactive map.
