Michael and his wife lived in Nome from 2011 to 2014. His favorite memory is walking down the beach in June, when ice was still floating, and children were swimming in the freezing water. He saw it as a testament to the strength of the Native population. Nome itself is barely 125 years old, but beneath it lies a vast history, one that Alaska author Michael Engelhard scratches the surface of in his latest book. “No Place Like Nome” is a collection of observations and explorations that wander along the streets of the small outpost and then outward, far beyond the city limits.
