It’s time for Page Two: news that might not make the front page on Friday October 10, 2025.

If you’ve driven Palmer-Fishhook Road, you probably have had a close call at the intersection with Trunk Road. Crashes at that intersection are over three times higher than the statewide average for similar intersections.

DOT plans to make this intersection safer. Next summer, a $5.65 million roundabout project will begin.

To prepare for the project, utility work on the Palmer Fishhook-Trunk Road intersection has started.

Expect traffic delays and lane closures at the intersection Monday through Saturday until at least October 25. Thank you to the Mat-Su Sentinel for first reporting this.

And Wasilla-Fishhhook will have a closure from ten a.m. to noon tomorrow.

Emergency responders from across the Mat-Su Borough will come together for a full-scale active shooter and mass casualty drill at Iditarod Elementary School.

According to the Wasilla Police Department, this is a controlled exercise and not a threat to public safety. It’s part of ongoing training to improve coordination during major emergencies.

Ten agencies will take part in the drill. They include the Wasilla and Palmer Police Departments, MATCOM Public Safety Dispatch, the Mat-Su School District, and other law enforcement, fire, and medical teams.

Agencies will test communication systems, command structures, and overall readiness during the active shooter simulation.

During the training, Wasilla Fishhook Road will be closed between East Kalli Circle and East Aspen Avenue.

Nearby residents may see emergency vehicles and flashing lights. They may also hear sirens, shouting, and simulated gunfire. They may also see actors with theatrical makeup playing the role of injured victims.

The public is asked not to fly personal drones in the area during that time since drones will be in use during the exercise.
